Sylvantechie and I purchased a 25 gallon aquarium on Saturday, along with some aquatic plants and an embarrassing number of rocks. Sylvantechie did nearly all of the work of putting it together that night, as my arms aren't really long enough to comfortably reach the bottom of the tank. We were going to wait until next weekend to get fish at the Swank Petstore in the big town to the south, but then we got all impatient and bought a few wee fishies at the local less swank petstore. While the tank is going through the initial nitrogen cycle (a process that can take 6-8 weeks), we just have a few small fishies (3 zebra danios tentatively named "daryl, daryl and daryl" and two Von Rio Tetras). But then later we can add more. Weeee! Fishies!

Hooray for fishies! We've been enjoying our 10-gallon tank since starting it in September. I think the zebra danios are pretty, although ours are a bit pesty: they chase the other fish around. I'm pushing for us to get some neon tetras next---we can add 2-3 more fish before we're "at capacity."

And yes, a 25 gallon aquarium takes a lot of gravel. Just wait till you use your siphon vacuum for the first time and see what comes OUT of the gravel!

Fishies are fun. Also there are plants and snails and funny things under the rock (which usually aren't intentional but show up anyway).
But yeah, the hardest part is being patient while the filters et al break themselves in because having got the tank you want fishies NOW.

(i miss my fishies but there is no room in this apartment for me, the dog, the books AND fishies, so one of us had to go.)

In my first college poetry workshop, a classmate with the same name as mine and a brilliant gift for incisive humor, started a poem:

"I maned the cockroaches on the beam next to my bed.
I named them all Allende, because I can't tell them apart."

Yay daryls!

More fishies love! You guys always admire our tank, so I knew it was only a matter of time. What do the cats think?

Oh yeah,

And I meant to say, but forgot:

The biggest, most important thing we've learned so far is that if you don't want to have snails, get rid of them the minute you see them. We apparently got a snail on one of our plants. We just figured we'd leave it alone....let it eat a bit of algae, etc. Apparently it was pregnant, however, and to date we've removed 16 snails from the tank! (Many snails are hermaphroditic, so anytime you have 2 snails, you're likely to have more.)

Other than that, yay fishies!
